Two Marshall County Schools are Purple Star Recipients

The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and the Common Ground Partnership are pleased to announce Cameron Elementary School and Sherrard Middle School are members of the 2025 class of Purple Star Award recipients.
These schools recognize the unique supports needed for students of military families to succeed in the classroom. They provide a productive and engaging system of community and educational support.
The Common Ground Partnership consists of military, government and community-based organizations that support the success of all students while also focusing on the needs of military-connected students who often experience unique circumstances and stressors due to the unpredictable nature of military deployments. The Common Ground Partnership recognizes the importance of schools supporting students and ensuring they know the exceptional resources available to receive a high-quality education.
Fifty-one schools received the award for the first time, and 170 schools successfully renewed their Purple Star status following a three-year period. This brings the total number of Purple Star schools to 315 in the Mountain State. Monongalia and Mercer counties have also earned 100% participation this year, as well as the West Virginia Schools of Diversion and Transition, recognizing them as Purple Star Districts. Brooke, Kanawha, Marion, Monroe, Pocahontas, Putnam and Tyler counties have all renewed their status as Purple Star Districts. In West Virginia, there are 17 Purple Star Districts. The WVDE provides all Purple Star schools and districts with certificates and banners to recognize their commitment.
“Purple Star recipients demonstrate the vital commitment and support needed for every student to succeed. They have gone above and beyond to recognize and address the needs of our military families,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “We are grateful for the Common Ground Partnership because it has strengthened the personal and academic goals of our students and has provided numerous opportunities and resources for student achievement.”
